Hennen aus Holz wurden auf Gedenkaltären für die Mütter von Familienoberhäuptern im nichthöfischen Bereich des ehemaligen Königreichs Benin im heutigen Nigeria aufgestellt. Sie symbolisieren die mütterliche Fürsorge für die Familie. Über den Sammler John Alexander Henderson gelangte die Plastik 1884 in die Sammlung des Museums.
