Online Beschreibung, Tieropfer waren fester Bestandteil der Rituale an den Altären in Benin. Zu den herausragenden Opfern gehörte Leoparden, die nur vom König selbst geopfert wurden. Leoparden standen nicht nur metaphorisch für die Macht des Königs, der König selbst wurde als Leopard gesehen. Er war der „Leopard des Palastes“ und somit der Gegenpart zum mächtigsten Tier der Natur, der Wildnis, die die Zivilisation umgab.In Messing gegossene Leopardenschädel verewigten die Opfergabe eines lebenden Leoparden.
