Types of Pots Produced in Benin Kingdom

Mrs Esohe and Mrs Felicia both feature in the video. Here they display the different types of clay pots that are produced in Benin. The first was uwawa akhue – this is the pot used traditionally for giving a deceased relative the last bath. There is also uwawa iha – this is used by traditional physicians like soothsayers (they are Oboiro and Obo Oronmila). They also show the Ukodo Eziza or Ukodo Osun – this is used for the deity of spiritual powers in medicinal herbs (Osun). The pot bears the patina of a horn used at the ancestral altar (oko) and cowries. There are plain Ukodo Osun_._ The pot with a neck is used for cooking herbs; the small pot with cowries at the mouth and oko at the sides are used by Olokun worshipers; the wide flat pot is used for offering sacrifices (it was the traditional type of pot for serving meals); the small round neck pot is used by Shango and Ogun worshipers; while the small flat meal-serving pot is often used today by celestial churches.
